How Do Tryouts Work?

How Tryouts Work

One thing we've believed in from day one is offering five tryout sessions. We do this for several reasons, but the biggest one is simple: we want to truly get to know every player.

Many spring hockey programs make team selections after only two or three tryout sessions. For us, that's just not enough time. We don't believe you can fully evaluate a player, or get to know who they are, in such a short window.

We're not only looking at hockey ability. We want to see how players compete, how they interact with teammates, how they respond to coaching, and the type of person they are. Our culture is built around developing great people first, and we want those values to be reflected throughout the tryout process.

Just as importantly, we want families to get to know us. Five sessions give players and parents the opportunity to experience our coaching style, our expectations, and our culture so you can really see what we are about.

No cuts are made until after the 5th and final session. Teams are announced within 24-48 hours from the moment tryouts are over for each age division.

💥 Individual Skills, Small Area Games & Scrimmages

Players will have the opportunity to showcase their individual skills through sessions focused on skating, puck handling, passing, shooting, and battle drills followed by a focus on small area games with the final two sessions being full ice scrimmages.

These tryouts are designed to evaluate each player's skill set, natural hockey instincts, compete level, and overall development, while also giving players multiple opportunities to demonstrate their abilities in a variety of game-like situations.

We Have Eyes 👀

Part of the reason we charge a tryout fee is the quality and depth of the evaluation process we provide. Our tryouts are designed to deliver real value, and a big part of that comes from the number of experienced, non-parent evaluators involved. We intentionally staff each session with a large evaluation team so every player is seen from multiple perspectives, ensuring thoughtful, well-rounded assessments rather than relying on just a few sets of eyes.
